About Sammy

Learn with Sammy, educated in China, the UK and France and bilingual in English and Mandarin. With extensive experience in Sino-British cultural exchange and advising international institutions and governments on tourism and culture, he brings a distinctive perspective to Chinese language and ways of thinking.

About the lesson

Designed for learners who already have a strong command of Chinese, this is a personalised, discussion-led approach to advanced language learning.

Rather than following a fixed textbook, we begin with your own professional and personal interests in China. Together, we select authentic reading and listening materials that give you something meaningful to think about—and then use them as the starting point for discussion in Chinese.

We might explore:
China Through Your Interests
• Contemporary Chinese society and culture
• Business and professional life
• History, philosophy and ideas
• Current issues and developments
• Subjects connected to your own interests

Discuss & Express
• Developing fluency and precision
• Expressing opinions and complex ideas
• Expanding vocabulary and idiomatic expression
• Understanding nuance and context
• Speaking with greater confidence and spontaneity

Read & Write
• Working with authentic Chinese texts and audio
• Written assignments tailored to your level
• Developing sophisticated written expression
• Feedback on vocabulary, grammar and structure

Chinese for Real Life
Lessons can also be adapted to specific situations you are preparing for—from a business meeting or presentation to a speech at a dinner party.

Format of teaching
Each lesson begins with material selected around your interests and objectives. You study the material beforehand; the lesson then becomes a conversation in Chinese—questioning, discussing, interpreting and exploring the ideas behind it.
The emphasis is not simply on speaking more Chinese, but on thinking, expressing and engaging more naturally in Chinese.

A Sino-British perspective
Educated in China, the UK and France, Sammy has spent his personal and professional life between Europe and Asia. His work in Sino-British cultural exchange, etiquette and interpersonal skills provides a distinctive perspective on the relationship between language, culture and ways of thinking.
Alongside this, he has advised the World Bank, Asian Development Bank and governments in Central Asia and the Caucasus on tourism and culture.

This means that Chinese can become more than a subject of study: it can become a way of understanding China and engaging with it on a deeper level.
