About Maria
I have worked in education for over two decades, focusing mainly on English language arts in elementary, but also helping ESL students acquire language skills. One of the most important aspects of learning is the student's "affective state" -- that is, how you feel. We will start with you, the student, and where you are at in your learning and goals. My students are my obsession and I carry them in my thoughts and planning even outside of lesson time. Your success and joy in learning is my greatest desire.

Patience, humor, and a love of language, literature, and writing for career-building, personal engagement, and ESL.
I base lessons on the individual/s in front of me, drawing from their needs and interests. Do you love baseball? Then let's shape a lesson around the local ball team's history. Language is most easily learned when the student has personal interest in the subject matter and when a positive mood is maintained. "Homework" can be fun and activity-centered, not just boring repetition. Song, story, poetry, art, and humor are all part of an enriching program that enlivens the student's own spark of curiosity and will to learn.
What sets me apart as a tutor is that I will always be your cheerleader, and I will be expressly focused on you and your goals. Real life experiences will make your lessons memorable and the material more easily retained and built upon.
Lessons are devised for any age of student wanting support, or any age for English language learners.
