About Grace
Hello! My name is Grace Doughty and I am currently a sophomore at DePaul University double majoring in Communications & Media and Criminology. I grew up in Chicago till high school and went to Glenbrook South for high school. In terms of what sets me apart as a tutor, is that I used to tutor my peers after school in middle school after my teacher asked me to. In high school, I have taken an Early Childhood Education class, a World History class, a Chicago History class, and a U.S. History class. Additionally, I took a Writing and Rhetoric class, multiple English classes, an advanced placement Psychology class, and an advanced placement Government & Politics class. With college, I took two Composition and Rhetoric classes, a Focal Point Seminar class, and a history class. On top of the endless amounts of textbook readings and papers I have had to write thus far for my Communications & Media and Criminology classes. What's unique about me is that I come from a family full of educators. My mom is an assistant Special Education teacher at Wescott Elementary School in Northbrook, IL, my grandma was an English as a Second Language teacher at Palmer Elementary School in Chicago, my great-uncle taught English at Von Steuben High School in Chicago, and my great-aunt taught English at Taft High School in Chicago. With what I learned from my family and what I have learned at DePaul University I will be able to put my skills to use in order to tutor your child!

I am able to tutor middle school students over Zoom for reading, writing, and history. To help them work on their school assignments, there are a couple of methods I will be using to approach tutoring. For reading, I plan to use guided reading and reciprocal teaching through asking questions about their inferences in order to improve fluency and comprehension and also through helping with context clues to infer the meaning of literature from surrounding text in order to build understanding and critical thinking. For writing, I plan to use the step-by-step writing approach in order to help them organize their thoughts and I will be using modeling texts by providing examples of quality writing for analysis and inspiration in order to show what good quality writing looks like to hopefully imitate. For history, I plan to use inquiry-based learning by asking open-ended questions in order for them to develop analytical skills, debates and discussions in order for them to develop critical thinking, argumentation, and perspective-taking, and I plan to use visual aids.
