About John
I have spent the last 6 years dedicated to teaching piano, working with over 150 students from high school and college communities. My teaching philosophy revolves around creating a welcoming and motivating atmosphere where students can thrive and build confidence. I emphasise technical accuracy, sight-reading, and musical interpretation, all while tailoring lessons to match the interests and goals of each student. Music should never feel like a chore, so I strive to connect each lesson to what the student loves, whether that’s classical, jazz, pop, or original compositions.
One of my proudest achievements as a tutor was helping a college student conquer their stage fright in preparation for their first major solo recital. Step by step, we worked on technique, performance skills, and mental preparation until they were ready to shine on stage. The standing ovation they received marked a milestone that felt like a shared victory. I see music as a powerful form of personal expression and growth, and I am committed to helping every student find their voice and passion through the piano. It’s not just about playing notes but about telling stories, evoking emotions, and building lifelong skills through music.

My philosophy of teaching piano is guided by consistency, collaboration, and the belief that music is for everyone. I strive to create lessons that are structured but flexible, rooted in tradition but responsive to each student’s needs and goals. At the core of my teaching is the belief that regular, focused practice—done with understanding and intention—is more valuable than endless hours at the keyboard. I help students build this kind of practice routine by teaching them how to break down problems, track their progress, and set small, achievable goals each week.
Collaboration is another essential value in my teaching. I don’t dictate a fixed path; instead, I work with students to shape the direction of their learning. If a student wants to focus on songwriting, or jazz improvisation, or classical technique, we adjust our curriculum to make that possible. I use a wide variety of materials—from traditional method books to lead sheets to digital tools—to keep lessons engaging and relevant. I also believe strongly in the power of encouragement. Many students come in with self-doubt or fear of making mistakes. I make it clear from the beginning that learning music is a journey filled with trial and error, and that mistakes are just stepping stones towards improvement. I use positive reinforcement to build self-confidence and celebrate milestones, no matter how small. My lessons include a mix of playing, listening, theory, and reflection, so students develop a well-rounded understanding of music.
I also make performance optional but available, offering casual recitals or family mini-concerts for students who want to share their progress. Over the 6 years, I’ve seen students develop not just skill, but passion—and for me, that’s the highest goal of music education. Whether a student ends up performing publicly or playing just for themselves, I want them to carry a lifelong love for music, and the knowledge that they are capable of learning and creating something meaningful.
