About Karla
My name is Karla (she/hers/ella). It is a pleasure to meet you! I was born in Barranquilla, Colombia, and grew up in Cartagena (Yes, I am all about the sea). Looking to expand my knowledge about Latin America, I decided to pursue a PhD in Hispanic Studies in Saint Louis, MO, USA. I received my degree last year and have been working in my local Art Museum since then. Teaching, however, was one of my most rewarding experiences during my doctorate, especially since I was able to create my own classes (My favorite one was Graphic Latin America, where I was able to teach about the history of the comic in the continent). I am coming to this platform looking to reconnect with my passion for teaching and hopefully support all types of learners in their journey to connection with Spanish. I approach each class with compassion and curiosity, especially as someone who is a non-native English speaker in an English-speaking country. Languages are all about connection, and I can't wait to share what makes Latin American culture such a unique source of creativity and resistance and also learn from your own cultures and stories.

When thinking about Spanish, I am always in awe of the diversity of stories and creativity that has emerged from different Spanish-speaking cultures. My goal is to make you more proficient in a language and help you use your new skills to connect with more communities and learn from them. This is why my lesson plans always include: *Assessment of your relationship with Spanish: This goes beyond a question about your level or skills. I want to know why you want to learn Spanish and what achievements or setbacks you have found in your learning journey. * First, a cultural scenario and then grammar (not the other way around!): We will explore what are your main cultural interests, and I will provide scenarios where you will practice using paintings, book fragments, movies, or songs. As a language learner, I always hated the mechanics of grammar formulas where you had to conjugate verbs, complete sentences, and choose words based on fake neutral stories. I want to show you how your knowledge, whether you are a beginner or advanced learner, already lets you know about other cultures. Then, using those examples, we will discuss grammar and vocabulary tips. You will learn about the formal elements of Spanish by creating associations with creative stories. * Accountability and follow-up: I am happy to be your accountability buddy and frequently check on your progress, assign homework that matches your needs, and adapt my teaching facilitation to your preferences (more visual, more audio, and even more grammar exercises if that is what you need) * All are welcome!: There is a terrible misconception that culture-based learning is only reserved for advanced students. This is not only inaccurate, but it reproduces a system where you have to "suffer first" (learn the basics) and then "enjoy" (practice what you learned). Join my classes, and don't delay the pleasure of connection and world-building that learning a new language generates!
