About Henry
A versatile cellist and teacher, Dr. Henry Myers has delighted audiences with his dazzling blend of technique and shrewd musicianship. As chamber musician and recitalist, he has performed throughout the United States, with recent engagements including the Ariel Concert Series in St. Louis, Missouri and the Austin Camerata in Austin, Texas, as well as performances at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa and Truman State in Kirksville, Missouri. As an orchestral musician, he has performed with the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, the Kansas City Symphony, and the Rochester Philharmonic. Henry is also an accomplished soloist, having performed William Walton's Cello Concerto with the Eastman Philharmonia in 2018. An equally passionate teacher, Henry served as interim cello faculty at SUNY Fredonia for the 2020 Spring semester, and taught non-major cello lessons at the University of Rochester as part of his graduate studies. Former students of his have been accepted to music programs at the Eastman School of Music, Vanderbilt University, SUNY Purchase, Ithaca College, and University of Missouri at Saint Louis. Henry was also Co-Director of Chamber Music at The Missouri Symphony Conservatory in Columbia, Missouri for the 2022-23 academic year. Currently, Henry teaches privately in St. Louis and online via Virtu.Academy, where he works with students of all ages and backgrounds from across the country. He has also written about pedagogy, penning an acclaimed essay in 2011 entitled “The Case For Active Practicing”, which was published on Ovation Press’ String Visions blog and cited by The Bulletproof Musician. Additionally, Henry has written for the Apple Music Classical platform, including listening guides for Brahms’ 1st Symphony and Bach’s D minor and C major cello suites, among other works. Henry grew up studying cello in St. Louis, Missouri with Ken Kulosa. After completing his Bachelor of Music degree at Northwestern University as a student of Hans Jensen, he continued his studies at the Eastman School of Music with Steven Doane and Rosemary Elliot, to whom he served as a graduate Teaching Assistant for five years, and as an Assistant to Guy Johnston for one year. Henry received a Master of Music degree with a Performer's Certificate from Eastman in 2018, and in 2022 Henry completed his studies by earning a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Cello Performance and Literature with a Minor in Music Theory. Henry currently lives in St. Louis, Missouri with his wife, violinist Dr. Sooah Jung and their Shiba Inu, Donut. Henry plays a 1962 Alberto Guerra cello.
