I currently serve as the Director of the Academic Success Center at the University of La Verne, and my professional relationship with Jordan would be characterized as supervisor/employee because she has served as a Writing Tutor and Academic Coach in our Academic Success Center for the past year. In her position as a Writing Tutor and Academic Coach at the University of La Verne, Jordan has been exposed to and trained to support diverse student populations including, but not limited to, first year students in remedial coursework, graduate students, and non-traditional students. Not only has Jordan worked with different populations of students, but she is also practiced in developing learning resources and curriculum which aid students in their efforts at the university. She regularly contributes to our ASC Portal of resources, as well as our staff trainings, where she is respected among her peers. During her time serving on my staff, Jordan has received numerous trainings focused on working with diverse learners, which includes identifying and understanding their needs as well as best practices and strategies for supporting them. In addition, Jordan has contributed to the campus community by using her knowledge and expertise to support others. She regularly worked on developing writing and research materials as well as offered workshops to support her peers in their successful completion of writing literature reviews. She has collaborated with our center leadership team, as well as other Writing Tutors and Academic Coaches, to develop a solid curriculum and materials which will aid students as they navigate their academics at our institution. Not all tutors or coaches serve in this capacity, but Jordan was selected due to her experience with diverse populations and her ability to develop quality supplemental materials which aid students in their academic tasks and efforts.
In addition to Jordan working with students in various capacities, she also understands the need to utilize diverse methods, strategies, and technological platforms in order to enhance student learning. Jordan is practiced in scaffolding techniques, concept mapping, convergent and divergent questioning, and co-facilitation, to name a few areas on which she has received training. In addition, she has understanding of learning theory, metacognition, pedagogy, and research within the field of education. Further, when considering student access, Jordan was challenged to incorporate technology into her practice, becoming familiar with Zoom and WebEx as well as our scheduling system’s online tutoring platform. It is these areas in which Jordan has been equipped that will translate successfully to this position. She is more than capable of supporting and equipping students as they become practiced in these areas as well as with additional strategies and techniques that I am confident Jordan will bring to your organization.
