About Richard

Dr Richard Pendry coaches MA and PhD students across the humanities and social sciences. An ethnographer by training, he is a thesis examiner and supervisory chair for PhD candidates at UK universities, and publishes in peer-reviewed academic journals. He holds a PhD from the University of Kent and brings an unusual combination of deep academic rigour and professional storytelling — as a BAFTA-winning documentary maker and filmmaker currently reporting from Ukraine. His journalism background gives him a rare ability to help students write with clarity and precision about complex ideas — because if you can explain it clearly, you've understood it.

Your supervisor knows their subject. What most don't have time to teach is what a thesis actually is — how it moves, how it argues, what examiners are really looking for.

This ethical coaching fills that gap, working alongside your supervisor not around them. While journalism and media studies is a particular strength, Richard coaches across the full range of humanities and social sciences — with hands-on experience of quantitative methodologies, and qualitative approaches including IPA, ethnography, and mixed methods research design.

Premium one-to-one sessions online.

Richard offers a free 20-minute introductory call to discuss your thesis and whether his coaching is right for you. All coaching sessions thereafter are charged at his standard rates.

He encourages all students to inform their university supervisor that they are receiving external coaching support. Transparency protects you, respects your institution, and is the mark of a serious researcher. Richard's role is to supplement your supervisor's expertise — never to replace it.

Structured packages are made up up of tailored sessions including:

Thesis Structure & Argument
Understanding what your thesis is actually supposed to do — and why it's structured the way it is. Chapter logic, argument flow, and analytical coherence.

Research Methodology
Quantitative methods, mixed methods, qualitative approaches including IPA, ethnography and news ethnography. Broad experience across humanities and social sciences research design — not just journalism.

Academic Writing for Practitioners
Helping journalists and media practitioners translate their professional instincts into rigorous academic argument. A rare and genuinely useful skill.

Viva Preparation
What examiners are actually looking for. How to defend your argument. Anticipating difficult questions. Walking in with confidence.

Supervisor Relationships
How to manage your supervisory relationship, how to communicate effectively, and yes — when and how to consider changing supervisors.

Writing Simply About Complex Ideas
The hardest intellectual skill — and the most impressive one. Examiners are not fooled by jargon. A student who can explain their argument in plain, precise language demonstrates deeper understanding than one who can't.
