About Ian
I am a Duke medical student with a strong academic background in the sciences and extensive experience supporting students at different learning levels. My training has emphasized critical thinking, clear communication, and disciplined study habits—skills I bring into every tutoring session.
I approach tutoring with professionalism, patience, and preparation. Each session is structured with clear goals, and I tailor my explanations to the student’s level of understanding to ensure concepts truly make sense. My approach as a tutor is structured, supportive, and focused on long-term understanding rather than short-term memorization. As a Duke medical student, I’ve learned how to break down complex material into clear, manageable steps and help students build study systems that actually work under pressure.
I focus on active learning, guided problem-solving, and spaced review. During sessions, I ask targeted questions to identify gaps, explain concepts using clear frameworks, and reinforce learning through practice questions and real examples. I adapt my explanations to each student’s learning style and pace.
A typical session begins with a brief check-in and review of recent material or assignments. We then focus on priority topics—such as homework questions, upcoming exams, or challenging concepts—using step-by-step explanations and practice. I end each lesson by summarizing key takeaways and helping the student plan what to review before our next session.
What sets me apart is my emphasis on consistency, accountability, and strategy. I don’t just help students “get through” assignments—I teach them how to study more efficiently, stay organized, and gain confidence in their abilities. My medical training allows me to explain science concepts clearly and logically, even when they feel overwhelming.
My lessons are ideal for middle school, high school, and early college students seeking support in biology, chemistry, and general study skills. I especially enjoy working with students who want regular, weekly support and a structured approach to improving their academic performance.
