About Alissa
My #1 goal is to have fun and instill a love of learning! I am skilled at helping students overcome learning barriers, based on years of researching evidence-based instructional models to make learning fun, relevant, and accessible. I have experience teaching reading for ages 3 and up. I graduated from the University of Washington with a Bachelor of Science in Bioengineering and a Bachelor of Arts in Music Performance, with a minor in Applied Mathematics. My interdisciplinary educational background has blessed me with original perspectives on teaching and the knowledge to tutor a wide variety of subjects.

Decades of research show that a systematic, sequential, and explicit literacy curriculum (such as the Orton-Gillingham method) bolsters student mastery of both written and oral language. It is especially effective for individuals with dyslexia, autism, and struggling readers.
At the first (free!) session, I diagnose where the student is currently at in terms of reading ability.
Pre-readers (ages 3+) will learn letters and the sounds they make. They also develop phonemic awareness - the most essential skill for successful readers - through fun rhyming activities and songs.
Readers who have mastered the alphabet learn increasingly complex reading concepts each lesson. They will reinforce everything they have already learned through speaking, writing, spelling, and reading activities.
