About Rosanne

I'm about to graduate with a BSc in Economics.
I currently tutor via 2 different child education charities whilst I study. I've tutored privately now for just over a year and it really is the highlight of my week.

Teaching Experience

Currently I tutor 2 boys aged 11, in preparation for their arrival at Winchester next year. This is carried out via an online platform called Learncube.
This provides an interactive whiteboard which the students can use too!
Since lockdown, most students have been getting a little more screen time than they usually would day-to-day. As a result, I have found students have become a little less patient with simply sitting down to study. This interactive platform allows them some screentime during their 1:1 or group tutor session. Win win!
I have found this method of tutoring most effective for children and parents with a very busy schedule. It's easy to use from anywhere, anytime.

I tutor a 5 year old girl with reading and writing.
I love to think of creative ways to teach her. She loves being active and creative so we play lots of games, make up silly sentences and stories, and then get writing!
She doesn’t respond well to ‘sit and read’ tutoring. She works best when we play word games first, and then sit down for some reading 20 minutes before finishing.
She is happiest doing two things at once (her hands are active whilst she reads) so I always have pipe cleaners handy on the desk when we do sit and read.
I’ve been tutoring said child for 2 months now. I always look forward to our sessions.
The family are really lovely and it’s so nice to see how much they support their child in her learning.

Reading and Spelling with Tabitha – age 7.
Two ½ hour sessions a week in the school environment, for 1 term.
I used non-conventional methods to try to build her confidence with reading, for example I would ask her to read aloud whilst I acted out the storyline.
We would play lots of games when spelling. “The floor is lava” was popular when learning phonics, and we would create Acronyms for tricky words, by making up silly stories.
Her teacher expressed to me that Tabitha couldn’t wait for our bi-weekly sessions because she has “the best time ever”!. I was very touched by this, and the feeling was mutual as I thoroughly enjoyed our sessions.

Completed 2 terms of tutoring – Mathematics GCSE
For the first term I tutored up to 4 students at a time, on a weekly basis in their school, prepping them for their GCSE’s. Students were below grade C and we were expected to help them attain at least a C.
The key to success in this role was to build rapport with students who really didn’t care much for school, or mathematics. My personal challenge was to try and offer them a good enough reason why their efforts in the session would be worth it.
I enjoyed this role as it challenged me in a way I hadn’t expected. I learnt a lot about dealing with teenagers. I learnt that speaking with them on their level and understanding the pressure they’re under, and how they may be dealing with it (because let’s face it, everyone deals with stress differently!) is a very good start to attaining those great results.

During Covid-19 lockdown I agreed to tutor for another term online, this time I tutored two lovely young boys (aged 7) in KS1 Mathematics. I was excited about taking on a new challenge, as I knew I would learn new ways of tutoring virtually.
I was unable to physically show a student how to answer a question, so I learned how to micromanage a task in order to explain myself fully, offering simple step-by-step instructions.
I would include simple ‘pen and paper’ games throughout the session to break up the hour.
The two students were great friends in school, but at different levels mathematically.
I tended to prepare separate questions for both of them to complete and make a game out of the tasks where I could.

I have a genuine passion and enthusiasm for the subjects I tutor. This enthusiasm is very much reflected in my lessons, which are interactive, fun and dynamic where possible!
I am on my feet at every opportunity, (especially with the little ones). I like to ask my students lots of open-ended questions about the subject, so that I may understand their way of thinking and tailor my teaching method to them.

I teach the subject with the aim that the student may apply the knowledge to a given problem, not just to answer exam questions. However, I do emphasise exam technique throughout my sessions, not just around exam period, so that this becomes second nature and the student has the best chance of gaining maximum marks.
