In my experience the key to success in any subject is practised application. The best way the brain learns is by applying its knowledge, so classes with me are mostly or entirely example based. For students preparing for exams (A-level and GCSE) I would expect per hour session they and I would have completed 3-4 questions (or a paper) in preparation, and in the hour we would discuss any difficulties with time/ getting started on problems, and we would mark their paper together, reworking any incorrect questions together. If students are struggling in a particular area we might just work through several examples of that in a session to drive it home, then set some examples of it to review the learning in the next. This latter approach would probably be one I would adopt with students less with exams in mind, focusing each week on strengthening their understanding of the curriculum concurrently with their school-teaching. The goals are determined by the students and what they want out of it, but if I believe I am seeing that they are capable of more than they think I will push them to find that confidence and to test the boundaries of what they think. Progress is measured in time and results, as they come to grasp with the subject areas they'll become both sharper and more consistent in their answering technique and their quality of work.
