About Austin

My first year of high school I took algebra 2 and struggled keeping up with the course. No matter how much I studied I always felt like I wasn't understanding everything and fell short every time. My first quarter grades slipped and I ended up getting a C in the first marking period. After that marking period something changed in my head and I paid more attention to what the teacher was actually saying and less about how quick I was having to copy the notes down. After that I quickly changed around and I got all As in every math class I have taken since. I got a 5 on AP Calc AB, AP Calc BC, and AP Statistics. Tutoring has always been something I have done for people in high school with most of my friends coming to me for explanations on their work, however now that I am in college people gravitate more towards Teaching Assistant's rather than their classmates. I have always felt accomplished helping others think the way I do because I feel like understanding why you are doing a formula or differentiating an equation has been taught secondary to the memorization.

As a student I always felt it was best knowing why I was doing something. While memorizing formulas is very important it will not get you all the way there. I believe understanding the reasoning behind why or how you do something is the most fundamental knowledge.

A typical way I would approach a subject would be to start with a basic problem on the subject and solve it out no matter how easy the process might seem. Then we can explore every step in the basic problem and figure out why we are doing it which will allow better application for future problems.

As a young person I understand how courses in high school can move quickly and you can sometimes feel left behind. A lot of what is taught now is rules and memorizing formulas which doesn't teach students enough about the math but more about the memorizing. So these lessons would be a way for students who are lost on how they should apply what they have learned to find why they are being taught something.
