About Jacob

Hello, I'm Jacob! I am currently an undergraduate studying aeronautical engineering at Imperial College London. I have been tutoring for several years now in maths, physics and chemistry and the experience has had a truly positive impact of my life. I usually conduct an initial diagnostic test subsequently tailoring my lessons to resonate with the students learning style. I myself am a student driven to understand the course material beyond the scope of the class and syllabus and I desire to install this belief in other students. Inviting all those who are curious to learn and hungry to achieve more to connect with me for an ever-enthralling journey up the learning curve.

Starting in year 11, I have tutored students at GCSE level in both maths and physics. One of my main drives is to teach the student how to learn as personally I felt this aspect of education is often overlooked despite its importance. I often encourage the students to try a variety of revision techniques in order to identify the best method for them.

With regards to learning or reinforcing content I prefer an inquiry-based approach as having spoken with both other teachers and tutors this method is often most effective in terms of helping a student understand the steps taken to reach a solution. As highlighted above I try to adapt to the students learning style and in the past have used quizlet, videos and my own presentations to ensure understanding.

Once the student has a deep understanding of the content the strategy to utilise this foundation in exams follows a "notes, learn, questions" approach; make good notes, learn the notes, practice questions. Most students follow an approach similar to this, unfortunately due a lack of focus on how to learn, few students do it effectively. My aim is to make this process as efficient and powerful as possible for the students.

At GCSE, I achieved ten 9's, one A, one A^, one 8. At A-level I achieved 4 A*'s in the subjects I teach. I was the Physics and Maths Captain at my school and awarded the Nuala Shepley award for "Academic Excellence". I currently study aeronautical engineering and Imperial College London.

Over the past few years I have volunteered at a special needs charity for children and as a library representative focused towards inspiring children to read. I also worked as a assistant swim teacher and hockey coach where I taught different sports techniques and also assisted in lesson plans.

With the experience I have outlined above, I have learnt how to interact in with students in a meaningful way, being able to communicate both effectively and efficiently to maximise results. I have had 3 long term tutees and have see a drastic improvement in results before GCSE exams. I have been described as having the ability to communicate thoughts and ideas in a clear and meticulous manner whilst also being able to convey ideas in different ways to ensure understanding. I aspire to utilise these skills to boost the potential of students ensuring they achieve goals previously seeming unattainable.
