My educational philosophy has been molded and influenced by my own educational experiences, both within educational institutions and without; by watching my own three children learn and grow; in studies for my master’s degree in TESOL in my excellent university’s experiential program; by observing other teachers; and, of course, by teaching and learning as I reflect on those in myself and for my students.
Because I love to learn and am a life-long learner, I very much see the value in inculcating that love of learning in students. Within any curriculum, it is necessary to find the sparks of interest that will draw students into the subject matter. This is done in a variety of ways: paying attention to the affective filter that is essential in connecting with students and that keeps them open to the teacher and content; showing and modeling sincere interest and curiosity in the content to be covered; having a sense of humor; observing and getting to know students and their learning styles, strengths, and weaknesses; being flexible enough to accommodate different learning styles and levels; and loving what I do.
Different educational contexts use different jargon to describe approaches and methodologies in learning. My belief is that the best approach consists of experiential learning in which the student is at the center. This is inquiry and the basis of the Socratic method. It has been around quite a long time and has proven to be effective. Task or project-based lessons are also vital to students’ learning, while the didactic, lecture-driven delivery model is less important, although when it is done well, can be brilliant and stimulating and can inspire student inquiry. Key to any learning model is the enthusiasm and energy that the teacher generates, and how well he or she facilitates lessons and activities. In today’s world, it is so important for students to experience learning in groups or teams in order to learn how to work together better. This is something I experienced first hand at my graduate school.
Finally, I think teachers who exhibit strong character, kindness, compassion, environmental awareness and concern, service in their community, and high standards of behavior have a significant influence on their students.
