About Joe
I have always been fascinated with accents ever since I was a child - why do we have them? What is going on when someone starts to sound 'better' when they learn a new language? What exactly are we doing with our mouths if we try to impersonate an accent?
When going through university, I learned the theory behind it, how linguists have distinguished sounds into a sort of alphabet of their own, surpassing languages themselves. With that knowledge, I saw that it must be possible to somehow break all this theory down for those learning English.
It was when I lived in Colombia for 2 years, eventually reaching fluency in Spanish, that I realised it's all about understanding what sounds you make in your mother tongue, looking at those equivalents in English, then considering what trends are going on, both at a micro- and macroscopic level. It's not just about trying to mimic the teacher until you happen to get it right, then you forget it after the class, nor is it about studying sound X and how it's different to sound Y.
The trick, it turns out, is in helping you to form an understanding of the 'identity' of a language, what its character is like - its tendencies, its preferences. If we can get that English likes to move nearly all of its vowels towards a particular 'e' sound that we hear in teach(er) or doct(or), then we can already solve at least half of the 'pronunciation issues' you've been warned about in one fell swoop.
If English speakers can appreciate that they effectively need to throw out the majority of their vowels and work hard on producing just the core 5 that are used in Spanish - that an 'o' in Spanish is always like the 'o' in 'hot' (for Brits, anyway), they can solve 50% of their 'sounding too English' problems straight away. It's tricks like these which provide me with the skills to make pronunciation and elocution easy.

My priority is in making you feel comfortable by approaching elocution from an engaging and concrete angle, not as if it were a lecture on theory. The key thing is conceptualising the sounds of English and practice in producing them, with informed guidance. Anyone can acquire any accent in reasonable time, it just requires the right perspective. That is what I happily provide.
I am a CELTA-qualified linguistics graduate, who loves languages, with experience teaching all ages/levels. Alongside deep knowledge of languages and phonology, I am charismatic and attentive to my students in order to provide them with quality service. A typical lesson with me would be 1 hour, although I am highly flexible.
