About James
I love literature and theatre, and I'm all about helping you to do the same! Getting fired-up about the things you're studying always leads to better results. So whatever your level of experience, we can find the best entry-point for the exciting aspects of literature and theatre. I've also tutored lots of students whose first language isn't English, so even if you're not super confident in expressing your ideas at first, that's absolutely ok: I'm always happy to take it slow, offer suggestions and edits, and guide you to find the clearest way to get your thoughts across. For students who are looking to take things to the next level, never fear! I love a complex essay or thesis, and I've helped plenty of students take their university work from a pass to a first in no time at all. Reviews from Current Students: ★★★★★ “We recently started lessons with James for my 7th-grade son, and the experience has been outstanding. James's ability to connect with his students and transform learning into a fun, engaging activity is remarkable.” ★★★★★ “From day one, James connected with my son at the level he was at. Now that we have had the privilege to see him in action, I am extremely happy that we found James. He knows how to meet my son where he is at and encourage him to bring out his best.”

I offer fun, flexible and engaging personal tutoring, tailored to the needs of each student and their level of study – from secondary right up to postgraduate research. My focus is on allowing students to connect with the material on a personal level, and find their excitement and passion for English and Theatre. We'll try to get to the core of what's happening in texts and performances, finding what excites you and developing the skills to express that in assessments and beyond! As a high school student in Australia, I achieved perfect scores in English, Theatre Studies and Drama, so I know what's needed to succeed at a secondary level. At the University of Melbourne I achieved the highest grade awarded for an English and Theatre Studies thesis, and the highest grade across the course generally. My postgraduate study at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London has also given me plenty of practical experience in theatre making, so I'm equally able to assist in practical theatre work if that's your area. I've tutored in theatre and literature for just over 5 years, with great results across the board for students in Melbourne and London. Lessons are available in both 1 and 2-hour slots, and include a review of any essay material you're preparing at the time!

James tutored me in vocal studies and music theory for a year, and it was a fantastic experience. He is knowledgeable and committed, understands many different styles and techniques, and runs a really relaxed and fun lesson. If you’re looking to brush up on your theory, or to work on vocal technique in musical theatre and pop, he’s a great person to learn from.
James is a great tutor. Patient, enthusiastic and reliable. He went at my pace and listened for What I was interested in, while filling in gaps in my knowledge I didn't realise I actually needed to know.
Personally, James really believed I could learn this stuff, which was great for me because I was nervous about music theory; despite it being something I felt would help me, I was always nervous about it as an undertaking. But because of James' enthusiasm and love of his subjects, I started having fun straight away too, which definitely made our sessions something to look forward to. And now I love music theory!! It's amazing!
Thanks James!!View more recommendations
