About Callista

I am an English Literature graduate from King's College London. Prior to university, I also did English Language and Literature Higher Level in IB and English Language and Literature GCSE. I got a 7 in my English IB finals (translates to A* in A levels) and an A* in GCSE. Although I did IB, I am also familiar and am an expertise in English Language/Literature A levels, since the topics and marking are similar.

I've always loved reading since I was a kid, and surprisingly, my passion for reading and literature has only increased throughout the years and after studying it in an academic level. Being able to analyse and understand the context behind the literary works that I read have just expanded my knowledge of them, and thus, my enjoyment of them.

I have a background in teaching and tutoring. In high school, I volunteered as an English tutor for underprivileged children in Indonesia. I also volunteered as a tutor in a non profit charity organisation - called KNS - last summer. Both of these experiences were so healing and inspiring, and I tried very hard to make the classes as interactive and interesting as possible, and I will do the same with my tutoring classes!

My classes will be based on course and exam preparation. Since it is aimed for GCSE and A level/IB students, my lessons will be aimed at students in elementary/sixth form. My classes will be around 1 hour but I am flexible and will suit your needs.

As an English Literature graduate, I am also used to writing academic level essays. Most of my essays in university obtained a First class and I also achieved a First in my final dissertation. Since GCSE and A level students might not be used to writing essays (and since English is an essay based subject), I can teach students what makes a good essay and how to structure one. I also have copies of my previous essays from my high school days, which will be helpful in using it as an example of how to write an essay. I don't believe that there is one way of writing an essay - and I don't want students to just improve by copying - but having a sample essay can be useful to break down why it received good grades and analyse what made it work.

Having completed various exams when I did my GCSEs and IB, I've also become accustomed to taking exams and I understand that doing well on exams is just a matter of practice. Through my classes, I can teach students how to approach various exams, including: how to break down questions, how to structure your time, and how to plan essays during an exam.

Most importantly, I will also teach students the basics in how to excel in English language and/or Literature, and a lot of it does come from literacy and critical thinking skills. I will teach students how to approach a literary text and break it down to its essences. Based on my other teaching experiences, I've found fun ways to do it; such as by starting lessons with an interactive writing exercise, having debate-based classes on a literary text, and adapting a literary text in a creative way.
