About Guan Kiong
A good teacher makes a world of difference. At school, I was average at most subjects but had a knack for writing, and my English and History teachers believed in me. And it paid off - I am a Doctorate holder in the discipline of History. My thesis looked at diplomacy through car sales in the Middle East by British and American companies during the Cold War. I started out my academic journey with a BA in English Literature and History at Durham University. I really enjoyed (and still do!) a good HG Wells novel.
I also work as a conference organiser for the University of St Andrews and behind a bar. What that means is you can expect me to be professional, organised and a competent multitasker. Both roles require a firm grip on 'order of service', and excellent communication skills. Most importantly, I live to serve, and I believe that there are no stupid questions.

I believe teaching starts by nurturing student interest even before the lesson. I will send a student a one-sided sheet detailing lesson objectives - texts, themes etc - for the student to read before the lesson. This will allow students and parents to assess learning outcomes and progress expectations.
I was employed as a seminar leader for a second-year undergraduate history module during my PhD years.I expect lessons to last 45-50 minutes on average, but am happy to stay on longer. I believe the lesson ends when a student has satisfied learning outcomes or made progress with a skill set, not when the proverbial bell rings!
I teach year 9 to final year undergraduate level.
