About Joe

I am a graduate in English literature, having studied at Russell Group standard, Cardiff University.

I have worked abroad with an SEN EASL child, in a primary school for a year (specialising in helping EASL pupils) as well as within the community as a children's worker succeeding that! I have gained a merit award with the Tefl Academy online course and I still help regularly with various children's groups within the community.

I am a big fan of reading, writing and often play sports!

My teaching method is akin to my experience working in both a school and community setting. Drawing alongside the individual, I like to set realistic goals so that the individual grows in confidence. For example, for my group of pupils who spoke English as a second language in the primary school I was working for, I was focusing on problem words, which would mean working with pronunciation, spelling and eventually, the context in which words that had been earmarked as problematic, would be used. Often this took the form of a detailed breakdown of a piece of writing. We would work together to isolate specific parts of the written work such as key words and details about the characters. Set questions would then enable the pupils to demonstrate their understanding of the set text.

I would also incorporate reading into my lessons. With each pupil we progressed through a list of books that would become increasingly more challenging. After each book I would work through set questions about said book with the pupil regarding setting, context, meaning and of course, searching for and spelling specific words.

One of my favourite methods was in inviting a pupil to demonstrate something that we had learned in the previous lesson so that he or she might showcase their understanding of a previous task. Once satisfied that each member could clearly demonstrate their understanding, I might turn the situation into a quick fire game. After this we would evolve the task by adding either new words, punctuation or relevant connectives for examples.

For far less advanced children such as the boy that I mentored whilst living in Thailand, but also younger pupils who I have worked alongside or both SEN and EASL pupils, often I prefer to implement, very basic methods. Focusing predominantly on nouns to begin with, isolating them and placing them into sentences that are accompanied by pictures. Following on from that, we would progress into verbs and adjectives, using cards to match a word to picture.

I have really enjoyed my time working with children teaching both english and maths!
