About Eleanor
English literature is my absolute passion; I have a B.A. in English Language and Literature from Oxford University, and am currently studying for a Ph.D. in English Literature from Birkbeck College, University of London. I started teaching undergraduates as part of that Ph.D. programme, and quickly realised that I loved being in a classroom, so I did extra modules on education theory and practice. My favourite thing about teaching is showing students how their enjoyment of a text (not just books - movies and music are fair game too) can be enhanced if they have the vocabulary and critical skills to talk about it. Working as a tutor is even more fun because it's so individualised: every lesson can be tailored specifically to the learner's needs and preferences. When I'm not reading, writing or teaching, I'm a classically trained singer, and also love to go walking in the countryside with my fiancé.

My lessons are an hour each and are designed for GCSE or A-Level students (i.e. ages 15-18). My style is conversational and collaborative: it isn't about me pouring information into your brain, but rather about creating an environment where you can confidently develop your own toolbox and we can find answers together. That means I'll go at your speed, and use the teaching techniques that work best for your personality. Whether you need support with constructing the argument for an essay, fine-tuning close reading skills, or working on the nuts and bolts of grammar, punctuation and spelling, I offer encouragement and guidance as you practise and develop your skills.
