About Arthur
I am currently writing my PhD in English Literature at Cardiff University, entitled 'Regicide and Revolution: The Arthurian Legend in the Seventeenth Century. I have been teaching undergraduates for the duration of my study, preparing and leading seminars as well as writing and delivering lectures. I am an Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, having completed my MA level teaching qualification. Due to the recent coronavirus pandemic, I have experience of teaching online and am more than happy for our tutoring sessions to be held that way.
My own research is primarily focused on early modern medievalism: the ways in which medieval textual traditions are treated in the early modern period. However, I have extensive experience working on and teaching literature from all eras, from the classical world up to the twentyfirst century.
I teach my students how to read and write critically, which are essential skills in all walks of life, not just English Literature. As well as this, I focus on essay writing (constructing an argument, paragraph structure etc), clear and effective communication through grammatically correct written English, and analysis.

I have extensive experience teaching undergraduate students, as laid out above; however, I have also occasionally offered tuition to A Level and GCSE students, as well as those who are transitioning between A Level and university study. The demands of a university essay are quite different to those of an A Level essay and it pays to be prepared before arriving in September.
English Literature is concened with readings, arguments, interpretations, and communication; as such, I find discussion to be the most effective way of learning. I set prep work that serves as a prompt for these conversations and I also have a number of in class exercises and resources that can enhance your existing skills in the areas of argumentation, analysis, interpretation, grammar and punctuation, and understanding of English Literature. I also hope that I can help you see just how wonderful and beautiful English Literature can be.
In terms of pedagogical methodology, I suppose I am most closely linked to the humanists. Humanist educational theories say that teachers and tutors are most effective when they faciliate the learning of others through open discussion and exploration of ideas, rather than through rigid instruction or enforced obedience.
