About Anna
I am currently studying English Literature with Classical Studies at the University of Bristol. I have a strong background in literature and languages, currently studying Latin at degree level as part of my course, as well as orating as a former competitive debater. I have plenty of experience coaching and tutoring, having coached school debate clubs for several years and working with younger children to
improve their literacy on a casual basis. I’m a warm and friendly person, who is excellent at building confidence, listening to my tutee’s needs and making them feel comfortable to ask the questions that will let them grow.

I focus on building confidence around exams, breaking down the skills they need to demonstrate and taking these skills session by session until they feel relaxed about the expectations and how to deliver them. The long question format of English exams can be intimidating for those who are new to them, so I explain how to structure their answers succinctly and clearly. I would then move on to going through the important terms and devices they will need to be able to expand on. I get them to read little sections of different plays, books, poems regularly so they learn what they’re looking for and feel confident in tackling unseen works in the exam. For example, one session may be focused on how writers use meter, so I would provide a range of reading we would look at together, discuss before seeing if they could put together a quick analysis. Practicing how to write your answers is crucial, helping to build recall and critical writing skills.
When it comes to language exams, I deploy a similar method of getting comfortable with the terms, phrases and formats they’re expected to know through examples and little practice answers.
I try not to overwhelm with too much in one go, so keep sessions focused on one or two issues and leave time for the tutee to explore something they’re interested by in greater depth- as well as passing exams, I want to help cultivate their passion for something I absolutely love as well!
