About James
I love literature and theatre, and I'm all about helping you to do the same! Getting fired-up about the things you're studying always leads to better results. So whatever your level of experience, we can find the best entry-point for the exciting aspects of literature and theatre. I've also tutored lots of students whose first language isn't English, so even if you're not super confident in expressing your ideas at first, that's absolutely ok: I'm always happy to take it slow, offer suggestions and edits, and guide you to find the clearest way to get your thoughts across. For students who are looking to take things to the next level, never fear! I love a complex essay or thesis, and I've helped plenty of students take their university work from a pass to a first in no time at all.

I offer fun, flexible and engaging personal tutoring, tailored to the needs of each student and their level of study – from VCE/secondary right up to postgraduate research. My focus is on allowing students to connect with the material on a personal level, and find their excitement and passion for English and Theatre. We'll try to get to the core of what's happening in texts and performances, finding what excites you and developing the skills to express that in assessments and beyond!
As a VCE student, I achieved perfect scores in English, Theatre Studies and Drama, so I know what's needed to succeed at a secondary level. At the University of Melbourne I achieved the highest grade awarded for an English and Theatre Studies thesis, and the highest grade across the course generally. My postgraduate study at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London has also given me plenty of practical experience in theatre making, so I'm equally able to assist in practical theatre work if that's your area. I've tutored in theatre and literature for just over 5 years, with great results across the board for students in Melbourne and London.
Lessons are available in both 1 and 2-hour slots, and include a review of any essay material you're preparing at the time!

Perfect! Great connection with Isaac and understood what Isaac wanted out of the session and gave great advice
Perfect! My son started taking lessons from James a few weeks ago. He was after extra help to get better at storytelling and making his ability to express more robust and elegant.
From day one, James connected with my son at the level he was at. He had the first lesson to find out about my son’s skill level and, what he is after. Now that we have had the privilege to see him in action, I am extremely happy that we found James. He knows how to meet my son where he is at and encourage him to bring out his best.
When I had a chat to my son about what he felt and how the lessons are going, this is what he told me:
>> “James showed me ways to narrate a piece of writing in a way I didn’t know possible.”
>> “His knowledge especially around media allowed James to help me prepare an assignment extremely well.”
>> “James us extremely supportive, he encourages me to push forward and complements the suggestions I make with his thoughts to make it even better.”
>> “James is engaging. He brings a lot of energy into the conversation and make the lesson interesting and effective.”
>> “James is funny and a cool teacher. I really like him”
As his dad, I think that's what any parent would love to hear.Perfect! We recently started lessons with James for my 7th-grade son, and the experience has been outstanding. James employs interactive teaching methods that have not only captivated my son's interest in English but have also significantly improved his skills in a short period. James's ability to connect with his students and transform learning into a fun, engaging activity is remarkable. His patience, enthusiasm, and tailored approach to teaching have made a notable difference in my son's attitude towards English.
- Vinuk's a highly engaged, curious and intelligent student; he's able to analyse texts, notice metaphors and techniques, and understand how they're working within a piece. We can work in future on confidence with grammar and written expression, but a great start.James's response :

James is a dedicated and enthusiastic teacher. He has got a huge and voracious knowledge of English literature and drama texts. While being excellent at the core texts, he also brings in considerable expertise from outside the core texts, helping to push grades into the top marks zone! He also builds great personal relationships with students and is a non-patronising and exciting teacher to learn from. I can strongly recommend.
James is a great tutor because he’s really patient and clear. He helped me work on practice exams for the written component and also helped me prepare and finesse my practical assessment.
Thanks James! Would highly recommendView more recommendations
