About Robert Winston
I am currently on summer break from pursuing a Master of Arts degree in Teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) at the University of Arizona. I am already mid-career, with over three decades of experience as an ESL teacher in the U.S. (including the Northern Mariana Islands), China, South Korea, Armenia, and North Macedonia---in person and online.
Most recently, I have been teaching adult groups with Literacy Connects in Tucson, Arizona. In 2025, I taught in the Adult Education and Literacy program at McLennan Community College here in Waco, Texas. I also teach children and adults in private lessons.
I have taught students from diverse language and national backgrounds around the world. While I am primarily an English (ESL) teacher, I have also studied many other languages myself. Other than English, I am highly proficient (C2 level) in Mandarin Chinese. I can teach Mandarin, and I can communicate in Mandarin with English learners as needed.
I have academic, professional, and personal experience balanced between the U.S. and with Americans as well as various other countries and with people from all around the world. I have lived in 6 U.S. states, 6 other countries, plus the U.S. Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. I have also visited many other states, countries, and territories. I am practically a citizen of the world, and yet there is so much more to see and learn. Thank you for your interest!

It's essential for teachers and students to have a growth mindset, as we are all lifelong learners. I am enthusiastic about helping others, and I am interested in teaching students what they want and need to learn. I am happy to prepare custom lessons catered to the individual students' interests and needs. As my student, please feel free to ask me questions and request topics you want covered and issues you want addressed.
I understand that language learners need to use the target language in order to become better language users, while I also respect that students learning an additional language are likely to benefit from making associations with their first or other languages, either on their own or with the help of their teacher. As both a student and teacher myself, I love this language-learning process!
Though I have my own knowledge and skills, if you are my student, I will also keep an open mind as I work with you.
