About Ruth

I have 20 years teaching and lecturing experience in UK universities, and an extensive CV spanning several disciplines (MA (Classics) Oxon, PhD (English) London, Common Professional Examination and Legal Practice qualifications in Law). I am now an independent scholar and research fellow, trying to write a book... and to keep my teaching skills sharp, I would love to work individually or in small groups with as broad a range of students as possible! In my academic career, I taught a huge range of subjects from English to Family Law and Medical Law. I am also able to provide tutoring in Law and Politics from A-level to degree level. Having published extensively in English, Law and Politics across a number of peer-reviewed international academic journals, I am also able to assist students who want to attain the highest standards of academic English, or communicate more effectively in professional and business settings (I have also previously worked as an accountant and trainee solicitor in well regarded UK firms).

About the lesson

After consultation with you about your level of attainment to date, learning aims and timescale, including any specific outcomes you wish to achieve such as examination passes, I will structure a personal programme for you. Lessons will typically last one hour and will involve oral, aural and written exercises. I will set homework at a level which is achievable for you and fits your schedule. I tend to discourage excessive reliance on AI in lessons and homework, as I have seen where this leads with my university students. While we cannot avoid it these days, it is always better in my opinion to use your own brain first! I take a flexible and sensitive, but rigorous approach to teaching and learning, and will motivate you to reach (and hopefully exceed) your expectations and goals. I am particularly aware of the issues faced by neurodivergent students, having taught many in the past with successful outcomes. Given that my teaching experience is in higher education, I prefer to teach students aged 16 plus, but am open to discussing how I might work with younger students.
