About Clare

I have two Bachelor's degrees in English and Journalism from Virginia Tech. After graduating in 2017, I lived in Seoul, South Korea for two years to work at a private English academy. I taught students from ages 5 to 14 and often had to utilize unique teaching methods for my students who were new English learners. After returning to the States, I taught English online to students living in mainland China. This was an interesting challenge because the time difference meant that my classes began at 3 a.m.! I later moved to Los Angeles, California and worked for another two years as a substitute teacher for the Glendale Unified School District. While teaching, I continued tutoring online and gained more in-person tutoring clients. I have now returned to the East Coast and am in law school at American University. I love finding new ways to interact with students and I love watching them become more confident in their school work.

About the lesson

I like to learn about my students' struggles and processes in the first session. After this, I make it a point to involve the families in ensuring any new strategies are created thoughtfully and collaboratively in consideration of the student's personality and capabilities. A typical lesson plan would have an exercise reviewing what the student knows or what we've learned, often in the form of a game to help them get engaged. Then, there would be intensive focus on new material before a review of what we've learned in the form of school work or another activity approved by the family. What sets me apart as a tutor is that I like to make sure my students are learning in a way that is fun for them, often taking input from the students and family on the ways in which they like to learn and their interests. This keeps them engaged and gets the students excited to bring me their own practice material. I have experience teaching a variety of students, from those still learning early phonics in kindergarten to those studying rhetorical devices and literature in 6th grade. I also have experience tutoring students with learning difficulties.
