About Chloë

I am an educator, writer, artist and academic from Australia, based in Berlin. My own academic success and professional achievements have been patiently built over the years and I thoroughly appreciate that many students find difficulty mastering some aspect of the tasks they are faced with, even when their general understanding is excellent. Time management, organisation and study skills often require direct teaching rather than leaving these skills to chance.

I have a particular interest in supporting International Baccalaureate students in English, Theory of Knowledge, the Extended Essay development, Arts/Music-related subjects. I particularly admire the IB programme, recognising how well it prepares students for tertiary study as well as global citizenship. With over 20 years of teaching experience across private, primary, secondary and university settings and with a PhD from Monash University I am equally well equipped to help students with general academic research, writing, performance and presentation. I enjoy helping students develop their ideas, frame questions and approach their studies with confidence, academic rigour and independence.

I work with students at many different levels, from school-aged learners through to university students, adult learners and emerging professionals. My teaching experience includes one-to-one tutoring, university teaching, exam and thesis assessments, workshops, mentoring, written feedback, presentation support and discussion-based learning.

As a tutor, I can support students with English, essay writing, reading comprehension, creative writing, grammar, study skills, assignment planning, decoding rubrics, understanding criteria and meeting the specific assessment requirements. My approach is particularly suited to students who want to strengthen the way they develop, organise and communicate complex ideas.

I take great pride in my lesson preparation, ensuring that no time is wasted and that I am well versed in the specific curriculum material or skill to be worked on. I start each session with a review of previous progress, identifying issues and then establishing clear learning goals for the lesson. I make sure I have articulated our aims clearly and that the student feels confident.

In lessons, we might work on the specifics of essay planning, building specific vocabulary, close reading, argument development, written expression, refining research questions, structure, grammar, comprehension, presentation skills or study strategies. Often a lesson might be devoted to thoroughly unpacking the criteria for assessment and ensuring that the student is able to meet the criteria to the highest possible level. I teach for success and am very aware that it is understanding how to satisfy the criteria itself, rather than understanding a topic or task, that can cause a barrier to success and a disappointing result.

For IB students as well as tertiary students lessons may include developing stronger analytical writing, understanding how to respond to specific assessment criteria, refining Extended Essay ideas, improving TOK discussion technique, preparing for oral presentations across subject areas or learning how to communicate complex ideas with greater clarity and confidence. Expanding ideas and presenting evidence to support a viewpoint are all areas that may need specific skill development.

Each lesson is tailored to the student’s current needs. Some students may want regular weekly support across semesters, while others may need focused help with a particular essay, assessment, presentation, research project or exam preparation. Lessons may include discussion, crafting questions, writing exercises, detailed feedback on drafts, research suggestions, revision strategies and step-by-step analysis of assignments.

My approach is kind, patient and highly personalised. I empathise with the pressure students often experience, which can be a significant barrier to learning. Students find me approachable and I recognise that humour can often play a very positive role in learning. Students are encouraged to ask questions, think critically, develop their own ideas and become more confident expressing themselves in both written and spoken academic work.
