About Lorcan
Having just finished an English degree at University College London, I understand just how gruelling essay-writing can be. The step-up from GCSE to IB is no easy task, suddenly there is far more being demanded of you as a student. The IB syllabus requires a particular focus upon literary criticism and historiography, which is, for the most part, largely ignored throughout the GCSEs. Having attained 7s in both History and English, I will be able to help hone your child’s essay-writing skills, ensuring they achieve the difficult balance between detail and analysis as demanded by the marking criteria. My focus as a tutor will obviously be striving towards academic excellence, but I think fostering a comfortable atmosphere is just as key, encouraging your children to love the subject, whether that be English or History as much as I do. Unlike the GCSE and A-Level, IB English places a particular emphasis upon presentation in its interactive oral and individual oral commentary. These can both prove especially difficult for some students as they require a certain degree of improvisation and confidence in public speaking. Having achieved top marks in both of these, I will work to ensure that your children are as just as prepared to excel in the demonstration-based facets of the course.
