About Piers

Hi there, welcome to my page!

I am a recent Graduate of Cardiff University, having studied English Literature with Creative Writing to BA (Hons) level. I also have recent first-hand experience with GCSE’s and A Levels, having left school in 2017!

However, this webpage is really about your needs as a prospective client and how I can fulfil them:

- I believe in an approach to teaching that fosters an interest, or even passion in the subject.

o I can starkly remember the difference between the good and bad English teachers that I have had over the years, and I can remember the lessons from the teachers that inspired me the most.

o Some of the most common thoughts that I remember having were:

“English is ok, but it doesn’t seem to have a point”

“I keep trying, but I can’t seem to get it right”

“Surely the curtains being blue has nothing to do with how the main character is feeling”

“I can’t seem to get the same marks as my classmates”

“I don’t know what to write”

“My teacher keeps telling me to be more concise”

o Yet, with the lucky help of some teachers who had an understanding and passion for the subject, I understood that the approach I needed, was simpler than I thought!

o It wasn’t about knowing all the terms for every different technique, or making up something that I thought the examiner would like…

o It was about reading the text, and asking myself a simple question:

 How do I feel?

o No, really! How does the text make me feel? Then, you ask another simple question, “what bits of the text specifically made me feel this way?”

o You then go back through and highlight those bits and use them as evidence to argue why the text made you feel that way.

o There are of course other things that can or should be considered, depending on the question, such as:

 Using a specific theory like structuralism or psychoanalysis as a lens to understand a text

 How can I make my writing interesting to read?

 How can I make my writing more concise? (Waffle is bad!)

 Are there specific terms I can use to strengthen my argument? (And get more marks in your GCSEs/A levels!)

o Yet at its core English Literature is actually a case of asking how you feel!

o This approach has helped me in my GCSEs, my A Levels and even my university degree.

So, if you think that you or your child needs that little bit help get them through their English lit needs, let me know as I want to help in any way that I can!
