About Amanda

I have over 8 years of tutoring/teaching experience mostly in English and English as a Second Language with students up to grade 8. I taught a variety of topics including grammar, vocabulary, spelling, reading, story writing and oral communication and provided homework assistance. Furthermore, working with a special needs student for three years was an immensely valuable and rewarding experience. I also have experience working with children in another aspect: as an Editorial Assistant for a children’s magazine where I supervised and guided the children journalists in conducting interviews at events as well as editing their articles.

About the lesson

I believe in a balanced, future-focused education for everyone. By supporting academic subjects (such as English, Languages, Math and Science) and teaching transferable life skills (such as communication, critical thinking and problem solving), students will become well-rounded and able to adapt to new situations and experiences. To do this, I use a goal-based learning model with a skills-first approach. I start by assessing the student in various topics, pinpointing strengths and areas of improvement then setting goals based on these tests. The next step is assisting the student in forming habits and ensuring that he or she keeps with the routine while boosting confidence through positive reinforcement and creative activities. I enjoy helping the student develop their social and general life skills such as communication, critical thinking and problem solving through these activities and projects. I would tailor all instruction to the individual student’s needs and learning style. Throughout the entire teaching/learning process, I would communicate a lot with the students and their parents as well as monitor, record and report progress and areas that need improvement.
