About Bev
Qualified English language tutor with experience in teaching Pre-Intermediate and Elementary level English learners. Also experienced in teaching English grammar, spelling, oral presentation skills to HE students and learners in adult education. My real passion lies in English literature and language and I have successfully tutored students from aged five and above (KS1 and 2) in phonics through to those at GSCE and A level. My students always achieve higher self-esteem, self-awareness and have better learning strategies and knowledge; then apply these to obtain higher grades.

I have an honours degree in English with History of Art which provided the opportunity to study the Restoration to the Romantics including novels, poetry and plays. My passion is English literature and language as I enjoy discovering the depths and various levels of meaning in the texts. I believe that, drawing on twenty years of experience in facilitating students to reach their learning outcomes successfully, I am able to work with students in a bespoke way to ensure that I address their areas of difficulty. In referring to the relevant exam board learning expectations, the student's set texts and bringing in my own creativity I am able to move students forward by giving them analytical skills which they can apply across all texts. I tutor GCSE and A level English pupils and use my abilities in making the complex seem simple through using analogy and rephrasing and breaking down chunks of text to make it accessible. My aim is to use modern parallels to bring classic texts to life and seem more relevant and engaging to the student but also to make these sessions something to look forward to. Being qualified in teaching English grammar, vocabulary and English skills via the Cambridge English Language Teaching for Adults, Level 5 Certificate, I have taught lessons in one to one and in group settings. I am currently teaching English language and literature at GCSE level in Leeds and Wakefield and I taught in in Egypt, to Arabic speakers.
I have many years of experience in teaching and coaching HE and Adult Education students in Employability skills. In particular with reference to their writing style; English grammar, spelling and punctuation; I am also experienced in critiquing oral presentations and dissertations. I have assisted students in reaching their learning outcomes and their life goals using empathy, building trust, being reliable and conscientious and genuinely caring about my students. I have worked mainly with ages 16+ but I can work with any age group. Recently I been tutoring in phonics and pronunciation at KS1 and in punctuation, prepositions, conjunctions and sentence structure; in addition to SATs reading at KS2.
