About Penelope

As a dedicated pianist and teacher with over three years of experience, my journey in music began at a young age, leading to a lifelong passion for the piano. My formal training in both classical and jazz genres has equipped me with a versatile skill set, allowing me to appreciate the nuances and intricacies of different musical styles. This diverse background has not only enriched my own playing but also informs my teaching approach, making it adaptable and inclusive for students of all levels and interests.

My teaching philosophy is rooted in the belief that every student has a unique musical voice waiting to be discovered. I strive to create a nurturing and stimulating environment where students feel inspired to explore and express themselves through music. By tailoring lessons to individual needs and goals, I ensure that each student progresses at their own pace, building confidence and technical proficiency along the way. Whether guiding a beginner through their first notes or helping an advanced player refine their technique, my focus is always on fostering a deep connection to the music.

In addition to technical skills, I emphasize the importance of musicality and expression in my lessons. I encourage students to engage with the emotional and narrative aspects of the pieces they play, helping them to convey their personal interpretation and style. This holistic approach not only enhances their performance but also deepens their overall appreciation and understanding of music. I integrate a variety of teaching methods, including sight-reading, ear training, and improvisation, to develop well-rounded musicians capable of thriving in any musical context.

Outside of teaching, I remain actively involved in the musical community, participating in performances, workshops, and collaborative projects. These experiences continuously inform and enrich my teaching, allowing me to bring fresh insights and inspiration to my students. My ultimate goal as a piano teacher is to instill a lifelong love for music in my students, equipping them with the skills and confidence to pursue their musical dreams, whether as a rewarding hobby or a professional career.

A piano lesson with me is designed to be both educational and inspiring, focusing on the unique needs and goals of each student. From the outset, I assess the student's current skill level and musical interests to tailor the lesson plan accordingly. Whether a beginner looking to master the basics or an advanced player seeking to refine technique, my approach ensures that every student receives a personalized and engaging learning experience.

Lessons typically begin with a warm-up session, incorporating scales and finger exercises to build dexterity and strength. This is followed by a review of previously learned material to reinforce understanding and gauge progress. I introduce new concepts and pieces in a step-by-step manner, ensuring that the student feels confident and motivated. For classical enthusiasts, this might involve exploring the works of composers like Bach, Beethoven, or Chopin, while jazz aficionados might delve into improvisation and the study of standards.

An essential part of my teaching method is the emphasis on musicality and expression. I encourage students to connect emotionally with the music, fostering a deeper appreciation and more nuanced performance. Techniques such as phrasing, dynamics, and articulation are explored in detail, allowing students to bring their interpretations to life. Additionally, I incorporate sight-reading and ear training exercises to develop well-rounded musicianship.

To support continuous improvement, I provide constructive feedback and set achievable goals for practice between lessons. Students are encouraged to perform regularly, whether in informal settings or more formal recitals, to build confidence and stage presence. My ultimate aim is to inspire a lifelong passion for piano, equipping students with the skills and knowledge to enjoy and excel in their musical journey.
