About Joseph
As a Geography tutor, I am driven by a genuine interest of the natural world and have a passion for sharing my extensive knowledge of our wonderful planet with others. I strongly believe that by sharing my knowledge with future generations, it will enable an understanding of the threats to the natural world and allow us to think about what can be done to mitigate against these risks. These are the core principles of sustainability which is a fundamental concept throughout Geography.
Having achieved a Bachelors of Science Degree in Geography from the University of Leeds, I do find the study of physical geography particularly interesting as it is an extremely contemporary topic in the context of the challenges posed to local ecosystems by changing climate conditions and human activity. This reinforces the importance of education on the threats to the planet and what can be done to protect them sustainably. Undeterred by my passion for physical geography, I am also fascinated by the study of human geography and the interactive relationship between the natural environment and human communities, cultures and economies. In essence, studying geography allows a holistic approach to be taken to assessing real world problems across both the human and physical perspectives which is an invaluable life skill to have.
In addition to performing geographical research at University, I learnt to use ArcGIS modelling and RStudio coding to ultimately produce scientific reports and inform policies. Having studies both English Language and Maths at A-Level provided me with crucial skills which proved invaluable when writing these reports. The statistical and analytical skills acquired from Maths ensured I analysed large data sets efficiently and accurately and the study of English Language gave me confidence in the ability to translate large data sets into scientific reports.

In my final year at University, I undertook a teaching module with one of the tasks being to create a series of lesson plans for A Level geography students. I enjoyed this assignment thoroughly as it allowed me to tailor the lesson plans in ways which I thought would be beneficial for me to deliver the content from the specification so that the students could understand best. When designing these lesson plans, I realised that what truly sets me apart as a tutor is my unwavering commitment to helping students navigate the complex terrain of geography. As mentioned previously, I believe geography is about cultivating a holistic appreciation for the interconnectedness of our world rather than simply reciting facts and figures.
My teaching approach centres on fostering critical thinking, problem-solving, and a deep sense of curiosity. I'm dedicated to tailoring my lessons to accommodate diverse learning styles and paces, ensuring that each student's educational journey is both enriching and enjoyable as I feel that when you enjoy what you are learning, you are more inclined to put additional effort into it.
