About Stefan
My name is Stefan, and I am a German tutor looking to help students understand the language even more, become more confident when using it, and appreciate how interesting and intellectual German can be!
I have spoken German for almost 25 years now since I learnt it at school and I am so grateful I did. It has helped me to explore and understand many places across Germany, Austria, Switzerland and even Liechtenstein. It has helped me to make new friends and feel closer to them. It has helped me have another way to express myself to people.
I also have a great interest in German history, particularly how it rebuilt itself after the Second World War into the modern economic and European powerhouse it is today. I hold a First-Class BA [Hons] Language Studies (French and German) from The Open University, and for my final dissertation, I wrote about the strengths of the modern German economy and the challenges it faces, especially when it comes to the reduced resources of our planet. I really enjoyed writing this as it enabled me to see how impactful and influential Germany has been in recent times and it reinforced my passion for the subject.
I also had an opportunity to visit Switzerland in the summer of 2026 and it was eye-opening to see how Standard German ("Hochdeutsch") is spoken alongside the collection of dialects that make up Swiss German. It showed me how there can be so many varieties within a language and it has made me determined to learn some more Swiss German - I like a challenge!
I hope my passion for all things German has been able to shine through as you have read this, and I will be glad to share this journey with you as I help you to speak and learn German with more clarity and confidence!

I will offer the first lesson for free so that you can make sure you are completely satisfied with my approach before continuing.
I am currently in the process of organising an Enhanced DBS Check.
My lessons are ideally designed for those in secondary school (ages 11-18) so that we can identify what you may be struggling with and work on targeted improvements for your coursework or exams. However, I am always open to working with adult learners or students of other ages.
The most important thing is working out what you need and want from our sessions to reach your specific goals. I am very patient, open, and understanding, and there will never be a need to feel embarrassed about making mistakes or not understanding something. In my experience, native speakers appreciate any genuine effort to learn and speak their language!
I make my lessons as engaging and interactive as possible and also like to include any topics or features that may really interest you, e.g. a favourite sport or hobby. I go to great efforts to personalise the process as much as possible.
Having previously worked as a teaching assistant in schools at both the primary and secondary level, I am very experienced in supporting young people and identifying what their needs may be. For anyone who has an EHCP or SEND, I have done extensive one-to-one work with children with additional needs, and I am very happy to adapt my teaching to accommodate such needs.
I am sure that by the end of our first conversation together, we will have a clear plan of how to work together!
