About Fotis

I am a physicist and machine learning researcher with a Distinction in Mathematical & Theoretical Physics from Oxford and a PhD in Machine Learning at CERN (Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow).

My work focuses on real-time decision systems, statistical modelling, and high-performance machine learning. Alongside research, I have extensive experience preparing students for Oxford admissions (PAT/ESAT and interviews), A-level Physics/Maths, and undergraduate physics modules.

I did not come from a traditional elite background — I grew up in a small village in Greece and largely self-taught advanced mathematics and physics due to financial constraints. This shaped my teaching philosophy: I focus on deep intuition, problem-solving strategy, and independent thinking rather than memorisation.

Over the years I have:

• Achieved Distinction in Mathematical & Theoretical Physics at Oxford
• Completed a CERN-based PhD using cutting-edge machine learning
• Competed successfully in international Physics/Astronomy Olympiads
• Helped students receive Oxford interview invitations and offers
• Supported university physics students in demanding theoretical modules.

If you are motivated and serious about improvement, I can help you move fast.

ESAT/PAT & Oxford Preparation

My ESAT/PAT preparation is highly structured and fully tailored to each student. Before each session, students receive carefully selected problem sets targeting the exact skills Oxford tests.

During lessons we:
• Diagnose weaknesses precisely
• Build fast and reliable problem-solving frameworks
• Develop mathematical fluency under time pressure
• Train for unfamiliar, high-difficulty questions

For interview preparation, I run realistic Oxford-style mock interviews using unseen problems. The focus is on how you think and communicate, not just reaching the final answer — exactly what Oxford tutors look for.

A-Level & University Support

For A-level and undergraduate students, lessons typically follow a structured but flexible format:
• Review of key homework problems
• Identification of conceptual gaps
• Clear explanations with strong physical intuition
• Guided problem solving together

I regularly help students with:
• A-level Physics & Mathematics
• ESAT/PAT preparation
• University Physics (Quantum, Statistical, Condensed Matter)
• Mathematical methods for physicists

Lesson Logistics

Lessons are conducted online via Zoom using a digital whiteboard and tablet, closely replicating the feel of an Oxford-style supervision. When helpful, students receive annotated notes or additional problem sets after the session.

Who I Work Best With I work best with motivated students who:
• Aim for top universities (Oxbridge, Imperial, etc.)
• Want deep understanding rather than shortcuts
• Are willing to engage with challenging problems

If you are primarily looking for quick homework fixes, I may not be the best fit.

Find out more about Fotis

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I was always curious about mathematics and physics, but my first serious interest in physics and astronomy developed when I was around 14 years old. Soon, I bought a telescope and things went on from there. Before I got into university, in an attempt to share my excitement about the stars and our universe, I gave a talk at my school and the feedback was overwhelmingly positive. It was a wonderful experience, and at this exact moment I realized that I should start teaching as soon as I am qualified.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach physics and mathematics, as well as astronomy, astrophysics and cosmology. Apart from that, I prepare students for admission tests and interviews at Oxford and Cambridge.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My role model, when I was in school, was my mathematics tutor. He saw my interest, and he would always prepare new puzzles and problems for me, to keep me going.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

You have to be good at your subject, but at the same time you also need various soft skills to understand the signals that the student is giving out.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

In one of my projects, my supervisors thought we should give up on a specific question because they thought it was way too difficult to solve. However, I did not listen to their advice, and after working very hard for a couple of days I managed to solve the problem. It came as a very pleasant surprise to my supervisors.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

The constant struggle for a scientist is to find funding for a project that he or she likes, and this can be quite competitive.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

    My passion is physics.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P) ?

My ability to "listen" to the student.
