About Sydney

Hi! I'm Sydney and I am a linguist who is passionate about language and has a true love for teaching. I hold a TESOL (Teaching English to Students of Other Languages) certificate and have been teaching English grammar and American standard pronunciation abroad for many years. I am also a Smith College graduate with a double major in theater and architecture and urbanism. I realized my true passion for languages and travel during my study abroad program at the Sorbonne in Paris, France. In 2010, I returned to Paris to improve my French proficiency and began my career in ESL education with the highly selective TAPIF (Teaching Assistant Program in France) securing a position in the prestigious design college L'ENSAAMA (l'École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Appliqués et des Métiers d'Art.) Since then I have traveled the world teaching ESL primarily in Asia, the Middle East and Europe. As a French and Spanish speaker, I understand the struggles of learning a new language and adapting your speech to create unique sounds and new grammar structures. Due to my diverse teaching background, I adapt easily to students' needs, encouraging them to push their boundaries of expression and reach their communication goals. I have helped some of my students get accepted to their first-choice graduate schools including the Royal College of Art in London and the Parsons School of Design in New York City. I've helped others finesse their public speeches and important presentations. I've even helped clients ace their job interview! I believe perfecting a language should be a fun and empowering experience and I hope to further spread my joy of teaching through the successes of my students.

My classes are specially tailored to each student's specific needs with the goal of increasing confidence and communication skills in English. I've worked with students from all over the world from beginners to business professionals.

I've found that in order to be successful in learning a new language, it's important to understand the building blocks. That is why in addition to conversation, games, reading and role playing, we will also pay special attention to grammar and American pronunciation.

As a French and Spanish speaker and an avid language student, I understand the struggles of adapting your speech to create unique sounds and new grammar patterns. In addition, I've had extensive experience adapting to different learning styles. Perhaps you are more of a visual or audio learner? Perhaps you need help with public speaking, work meetings or small talk? I'm ready to help you achieve your language goals, whatever they may be, in the way you learn best.

Though no two lesson plans are alike, a typical class is generally divided into 4 parts:

1. Conversation in order to pinpoint areas of difficulty in both grammar and pronunciation.
2. Corrections - I find students can get flustered with constant on the spot corrections so I provide a list to review together that also serves to keep track of reoccurring errors.
3. Themed lesson based on your interest and areas of difficulty. This could consist of a specific grammar lesson, videos that focus on vocabulary, current events, or a presentation related to your field or interest.
5. Lastly, we generally close with an activity or game to reinforce the topic once it is well understood.
