About Val
I offer online lessons for excluded and home-schooled students who may have lost interest and confidence in their abilities and help them find new enthusiasm for their learning. I also have experience teaching ESOL and offer lessons in Speaking and Listening, reading and writing. I enjoy writing and can offer proofreading and help with essay writing, Personal Statements, CVs and job applications. I am a keen reader and have many interests such as history, archaeology, geography and wildlife. My years spent teaching Primary School topics means I have collected some information about many subject areas and I am often in demand for a quiz team! My hobbies include cooking and baking cakes for my family. I enjoy country walks with my two cockapoos especially by the sea during the quieter seasons of Autumn and Winter.

My teaching method is learner centred and based around their own interests where possible. I am enthusiastic and find the fun in every subject for my students. I enjoy teaching all aspects of English and will work with individual students to create a personalised learning plan which will be enjoyable and will help them achieve their best outcome and boost their self-confidence. I will discuss with the student which areas they find challenging, as well as what their strengths are. I have a great deal of experience working with children who have extra learning challenges such as dyslexia, ASD or ADHD and anxiety. My lessons are online and use a variety of colourful images, articles and videos to engage the learner so that they can make progress while enjoying their learning. I have spent many years preparing students for SATs, 11+, Functional Skills English E3, L1, L2 and GCSE Language, Reading and Writing. I believe that if students enjoy their learning they will feel able to take responsibility for it and become lifelong learners, interested in everything around them.

Val takes the time to go through work with you bit by bit with no judgement or impatience about what it is you’re struggling with. As someone who really struggled with maths, I felt like I was in a calm environment where I could learn at my own pace and I soon felt more confident in my abilities.
Having known my sister, Val, all of my life, I would not hesitate in recommending her as a tutor in the field of English. Due to her rich and varied life experience and long career in education, Val has acquired many skills which will enable her to deliver tuition at the highest professional level. Amongst her attributes are patience and humour along with excellent communication skills. Val is also an extremely affable person and will quickly put a student at their ease with her friendly, approachable manner. She's also an excellent "problem solver". Having called upon Val's help over the years, in sorting out various issues, she has proven to be totally dependable and is excellent in approaching problems in a calm and highly methodical way. Having been employed for a time as a Teaching Assistant at a local primary school where Val was employed as a teacher, I can confirm that Val's teaching skills are highly effective, and she confidently demonstrated that she could quickly build a rapport with her pupils. Students will be in safe hands with such an effective and trustworthy tutor and Val will always ensure that their individual learning journeys are rewarding and fun.
