About Imy
Hello! My name is Imy, and I am an experienced, dedicated, and passionate teacher of the piano and of music. I started learning the piano aged 6 and never stopped playing since! I am a classical pianist and attended the specialist music school, Chetham's School of Music, and the Royal Northern College of Music. Throughout my studies, I have been fortunate enough to study with some wonderful piano teachers that undoubtedly inspired me to also become a teacher. Whilst I still love to perform, my true calling is teaching. Nothing is more satisfying than nurturing a student's potential and opening them up to the vast and exciting world of music, regardless of age or ability!

Approach to teaching:
Learning to play the piano is a complex and demanding activity. As teacher my task is to guide and support students at whatever level, whilst encouraging them to think and create independently.
I combine a thorough and disciplined approach along with a sense of exploration, fun and creative freedom. Activities such as improvisation, simple composition, ensemble playing, and listening tasks are frequently used in the lesson to help students develop a more well-rounded understanding of music.
Fundamentals in piano technique, music theory, and musical sensitivity are instilled in students from the first lesson. There is a strong emphasis on relaxation and physical freedom, as well as developing good habits in practice.
I have high expectations of all my students, and always encourage them to try their best and to have a positive and curious attitude towards learning. Ultimately, my aim is that each student to comes away from the lesson feeling inspired, motivated and supported.
Experience as a teacher and as a performer:
I have just recently finished a full time position as a piano teacher at the King Edward's School in Bath, which gave me the opportunity to work with students ranging from age 7 till 18. Prior to this, I had a successful private practice of over 20 students, again ranging all ages and abilities. During my time as a teacher, I have had extensive experience with preparing students for ABRSM and Trinity examinations in piano and theory, both in person and online.
As a performer, I started intensive study and training from the age of 14 and studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Chetham's School of Music, abroad in Italy for two years, and the Royal Northern College of Music. I hold undergraduate and postgraduate degrees from the RNCM. I have experience performing solo and chamber music recitals in venues around the UK, including the Wigmore Hall, Bridgewater Hall, and St. George’s Hall in Bristol. Whilst at the RNCM, I was also fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to take part in masterclasses by Boris Berman, Jean-Efflam Bavouzet, etc, as well as having success in competitions: winner of the RNCM Chopin Prize, Shirley Cattarall Prize for Piano, finalist of the RNCM Gold Medal and Concerto Competition.
