About Vanessa
About Me
I hold a Master's Degree in Elementary Education, and I plan to pursue my Education Specialist degree in the near future. I spent 12 years teaching in the classroom, including nine years focused on grammar and writing instruction and three years dedicated to reading. Education has always been central to my life, both professionally and personally. As a mother of three — two of whom are college graduates — and a grandmother to two, I've supported learners through every stage and understand what families are looking for in a tutor.
I value clear communication, reliability, and respect for your time and investment. My goal is to help your child build real skills and lasting confidence in reading and writing, not just get through the next assignment.

My Teaching Approach
Teaching Method and Techniques:
I believe in meeting students where they are and building from there. My approach combines direct instruction with plenty of guided practice — I explain concepts clearly, model the skill, then work alongside students as they apply it. For writing and grammar, I break down complex ideas into manageable steps. For reading, I focus on comprehension strategies that students can use independently. I ask questions to check understanding, encourage students to explain their thinking, and adjust my pace based on what they need in the moment.
Typical Lesson Plan:
A typical session starts with a quick check-in on how things are going and any questions from schoolwork. Then we move into the main focus — whether that's a writing skill, grammar concept, or reading strategy. I introduce the topic, show examples, and guide practice. We end with a brief review of what we covered and what to work on before our next meeting. Lessons usually run 45-60 minutes, but I adjust based on the student's attention span and needs.
What Sets Me Apart:
With 12 years of classroom experience and a Master's in Elementary Education, I've developed deep expertise across the ELA spectrum. I spent 9 years focused on grammar and writing instruction, teaching students how to build strong sentences, organize their ideas, and edit their work effectively. My 3 years dedicated to reading instruction gave me tools to help students comprehend complex texts and develop lasting strategies. I don't just teach content — I teach students how to think about their learning. I'm patient, consistent, and genuinely invested in their progress.
Who These Lessons Are For:
I work with elementary students in grades 3-6 who need support in English Language Arts — particularly writing, grammar, and reading comprehension. I am also willing to help any student needing help in these areas no matter the grade level. This includes students who are struggling to keep up, those who want to strengthen their skills, and students preparing for more advanced work. I'm comfortable working with diverse learners, including students who need extra scaffolding and those who are ready for enrichment.
