About Rebecca

Hi! I've recently graduated with First-Class honours in English Literature from the University of Edinburgh, and am looking to tutor English Literature and Language at all levels up to A Level/Pre-U/IB. I am an experienced teacher, and have worked with under-performing and SEN pupils with Schools Unlocked at West London Free School as an English Tutor for their Summer school. I also have experience private tutoring at GCSE level, where my student achieved a 7 after being predicted a 4.

My academic record demonstates my consistent aptitude for English Literature. I received an A* in English Language GCSE, an A in English Literature AS Level (the highest grade), a high Distinction (D1) in English Literature Pre-U (equivalent to A-Level), and a 1:1 in my English Literature degree at the University of Edinburgh (including a high 1:1 – 80% – in my dissertation, and 1:1 marks in 4/5 of my final year modules).

I am a keen reader, and my specialised knowledge in Modernism is useful for the usually Modernist-heavy GCSE and A Level courses. My aim in teaching English Literature is not only to improve my student's grades, but to instil within them a real passion for English Literature - I am keen to make subjects such as essay writing and practical criticism something that my students will be excited about, by prioritising thorough, independent understanding, as opposed to pragmatic rote learning. My previous experience with children and teaching - earning a youth leadership qualification, running youth camps and local drama schools and nannying a new-born baby - has developed my communication and adaptability, and allows me to offer methods of teaching on a consciously individual basis.

In my spare time, when I'm not reading, I love playing the piano and attending classical recitals. I also volunteer with a children's drama charity.

Feel free to get in touch with any questions. I look forward to hearing from you :)

My teaching approach is flexible, and dependent on how each tutee prefers to learn, but I generally adopt a very discursive and interactive style, which will combine the rigorous elements of practical criticism and analysis, with a broader coverage of thematic and contextual concerns. A combination of board-specific past papers and extracts from certain texts will be used in lessons to help consolidate what we have learnt. I aim to show a comprehensive approach to essay writing, which prioritises brevity and precision - a skill which is very important to hone in on as students of English Literature progress further in the academic system.
