About Ed
I am a passionate musician, DJ and music lover. I was classically trained on the piano from a young age but quickly became more interested in more contemporary music. I have a particular passion for dance music and have been DJing for around 10 years. I have developed a home studio setup over the last 5 years and have developed my music production & mixing abilities on Ableton to an industry standard level. I have recently had my first track signed to a record label. I enjoy teaching and developing others and look forward to helping people improve their skills and productions. I am just starting out as a music tutor so offering discounted rates. I have helped my students understand key mixing techniques that can turn a rough demo track into a polished and punchy track that stands up to similar music within its genre. Each lesson will take place in my home studio in St Neots and will consist of 5-10 minutes catching up on what you have been creating in your own time and how you have applied what you learnt in the last lesson. It is then up to you to guide exactly what you want to achieve for the remainder of the session.
Examples of techniques that I have helped my students apply to their music include:
- Compression - How and when to use - understanding the theory behind it.
-Space - using reverb, panning and EQ to help each element shine through in the mix and not muddy the sound
-Transients - understanding how they contribute to the tone, space and listenability of your music and how we can manipulate them.
-Limiting/ clipping/ saturation -Understanding how to harness these tools to create a full and upfront sound and pushing your track to a competitive volume whilst maintaining punch and clarity.
- Layering -creating depth, fullness and interest in your arrangement by understanding when to add and when to subtract elements, how to create and select the right sounds and how to tactfully insert them.
-Arrangement - applying tried and tested, genre specific templates to optimise interest and excitement and help take the listener on a musical journey.
