About Arthur

I am a seasoned guitar player having played for over 10 years and have volunteered as a guitar instructor at several youth organizations as well as teaching professionally. I have completed the Level 10 certification in Classical Piano and Theory from the Royal Conservatory of Music (hoping to start piano lessons by the end of the year too!) and have a ton of experience playing small live acoustic shows around Toronto ranging from small private events to coffee houses to street festival busking. I also have nearly a decade of experience working with youth, having worked with children and teens of all ages through several organizations. Police background check completed.

The music I teach on guitar (acoustic and electric) includes pop, rock, blues, indie, folk, and fingerstyle. I create lessons based on what genres and styles my students want to learn, while incorporating all the skills essential to playing the guitar. My methodology is student-focused, and my students' interests, skills, and strengths shape my individualized lesson plans. We will learn the songs and techniques that a student wants to learn, though along a route that also includes the skills and knowledge (ear training, theory, various chords, and playing styles) needed to be a well-rounded guitar player and musician. Most importantly, I believe in lessons that are friendly, fun, and respectful, and where both teacher and student can enjoy the joys of music, while consistently working towards set goals. *I have several new openings and am currently accepting new students.

  • When did you first develop a passion for music and your favorite instrument?

I first started to play guitar in my first year of high school, although it wasn't my first choice. I brought home a huge upright bass, but my mom got angry saying it was way to big to take home from school. The next day I went back and switched to guitar. I fell in love as soon as I tried it. Haha, I'm still grateful that she made me change to this day.
  • Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

There are a lot of artists I listen to on a regular basis, especially ones playing acoustic and indie folk music. But I like to discover and listen to something new more often than not, and I'm always looking for new jazz, rock, hip-hop, and electronic artists to enjoy too. Variety is one of my favourite things about music!
  • Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

I think one of the most difficult but rewarding parts of learning music is being able to create your music, either by sitting down and songwriting, or creating in the moment with a jam or solo. I encourage my students to take the things they learn from other songs and make them their own, and though it takes a lot of time and work it's really worth it in the end.
  • What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

For me the violin seems like a really hard instrument to learn and master, since it doesn't have any frets, and you need to develop a memory of where the notes are. For a guitar player like me it's amazing what violin and other string players can do.
  • What are your keys to success?

Consistant and thoughtful practice, and finding ways to enjoy everything you do with music are my keys to success. I strongly believe that 15 minutes of good practice a day is worth more than 3 hours of unfocused practice once a week. I also think you need to have fun with the challenge of practice so it never feels like a chore, but becomes one of the best parts of your day.
  • Name three musicians you dream of meeting in your favourite bar in the early hours of the morning. Explain why.

Three artists I would like to meet are Bjork, Dallas Green, and Olafur Arnards. Each of them makes music with very different instruments, and have different levels of fame, so I'd like to know more about their individual musical processes and lives as musicians since they are all big influences for me.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

I think that just as important as practice and loving music is meeting other musicians to learn and play with. I've made some of my best friends through music in school and shows, and collaborating with other people is one of music's greatest joys.
  • What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

I always want my students to be enjoying their lessons and practice at home, and while I push them to work and try harder, I always do so in a kind and fun way. Music is meant to be a an enjoyable journey, and I want to help all my students have fun on it!
