About Heather
I am an educator with over 16 years of experience working with youth age 7-18, with a focus on experiential learning. I taught secondary English for 10 years and serve as the director of a public project-based learning academy. I have a Bachelor's degree in English Language and Literature from the University of Virginia and a Master's in Teaching with a concentration in Elementary Education from UVa's Curry School of Education. I am certified to teach grades PreK-12 all subjects and 6-12 English in the state of Virginia.

To facilitate project-based learning, I evaluate the standards and skills students must learn to identify the career fields in which the knowledge and ideas are utilized or real-world problems those skills could be used to solve. I design an authentic problem for students to solve or a product for them to create which would have value to others in their community. I launch units with a high-interest entry event which inspires student inquiry and preasses to determine their background knowledge about the content. I teach through a combination of direct instruction, guided research, and independent practice. I think that it is important to provide timely and constructive feedback so that students can revise their work.
