About Alfred

I am passionate about the sciences and hope to convey this to the next generation of students. Over the past four years, I have developed successful methods for teaching. Notably, I have intensively tutored a middle-set student to receive a scholarship to Hokkaido University in Japan and a failing Chemistry student t receive the yr 10 Chemistry prize at her school. I took some time away from academia to go and teach English in Thailand and now hope to take on a PhD in Barcelona.

Teaching style:

When teaching I like to adapt my lesson plans to the student’s strengths by their learner style and how they respond to different types of problems. I find that this approach better engages the student and helps them to understand the material rather than just regurgitating facts

Lesson structure:

- Recap of previous lesson's material. I like to do this in a way that links different topics together. For example, when reviewing a reaction mechanism in Chemistry I may ask an advanced IB/A-level student to draw the molecular orbitals involved. This can help clarify concepts of electronegativity, molecular orbital theory, and reaction mechanisms in one exercise.

- Warmer activity for new material. After presenting the basics of the new material through powerpoint, students consolidate their understand their understanding through a game or simple exercise. Nothing too difficult.

- Main material. All students will be presented with the material required to take them to the top grade. I spend longer explaining this but try to break it into bitesize chunks where I explain a little and then the student does exercises. I find that this does not overload students. Exercises in this section are exam style questions catered towards very specific topics.

- Extension questions. If a student is confident in the exam style questions then we can look at some more interesting questions. These are not examinable but can help gain the student a greater understanding of why we do science in the manner it is done and how developing a framework of thinking for this subject can transfer to other subjects. For example, I may ask a GCSE student why Bohr's model of the atom may not work and why we continue to use it if this is the case.

I believe that science can be very creative and students will have the option to experience more of that side should they study with me.
