About Renee

I hold a Master of Arts in Education specializing in Cross Categorical Special Education, certification in Teaching Students with Visual Impairments and credentials in Cortical Visual Impairments. I have been a special Education Teacher for fifteen years. Seven of those years were spent as a Community-Based teacher in a high school alternate track setting for a local school district. In 2018/19 I had the rewarding opportunity to establish a Visual Impairment Program for a local school district. I have worked with Pre-K to high school students that are going to receive a certificate of achievement or an alternative pathway certification for graduation. I have served students in self-contained, inclusion and on-line settings. I was honored with the 2015-16 teacher of the year award. In 2019, I was appointed a two-year appointment as a member of the newly created Special Education Advisory Council (SEAC) for our Special School District. I participated in the Non-Tested Grade and Subjects Trainer meetings to collaborate with other special education specialist to create assessments, teacher evaluations, goals and objectives related to special populations (Exceptional Students). I have an excellent knowledge of IEPs, and the importance of ensuring all lessons are created with IEP goals and objective which should be aligned with state core standards/Connectors. I am knowledgeable at delivering Remote instruction using various Learning Media Systems (LMS) platforms. I have experience in providing students with the necessary accommodations to access the general curriculum. I have experience with teaching and modifying Tier 1 curriculum as well as using supplemental materials. I am highly qualified in teaching living and social skills as well as a vast experience with teaching vocational and transitional skills and have formed a network with various rehabilitation agencies and community worksites. I am proficient in providing the Extended Core Curriculum (a specialized set of vision-related skills for students who are blind or visually impaired e.g., Braille, abacus, slate/stylus, assistive technology, etc.). I am an advocate for parents and their children with disabilities to receive a Free and Appropriate Education.

I believe that all students can learn when given appropriate instruction and materials that allows multiply means of student engagement, representation, action, and expression. What I enjoy the most is problem solving with families and students to find strategies to overcome academics, living skills and work skill barriers for students with disabilities. Seeing a student's self-esteem grow because he/she can learn, and their parent’s confidence increase are the greatest rewards.
