About Mitch
Mitch Levine is a stage and film director, designer, teacher and arts administrator with credits the world over in theatre, film, opera and dance. He is a directing member of the renowned Actors Studio, was a fellow in performance and design at the Juilliard School and was the first James Cameron Fellow in Directing at the American Film Institute. He is a professional member of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA).
At the American Film Institute, Mitch directed COLETTE, based on the French writer, STALE IDENTITY, an homage to Hitchcock and film noir and SHADOWS, a multi-award winning exploration of love, family and the attraction of evil during the Holocaust. His film, IN CONFIDENCE, a short drama about a woman’s unusual journey, screened at the Cannes Film Festival. He directed nine episodes of the sit-com, LIVING & LEARNING, for C/W and the documentary HUNGRY IS THE TIGER, which utilizes traditional performance and focuses on the food crisis in India and Indonesia. He is currently in post-production on MORPHING GRAVITY, a documentary chronicling the creation of an aerial ballet and our yearning to be free of gravity.
As a teacher and lecturer at Loyola Marymount University, Lee College, the School of Visual Arts (NY) and the Dortort Institute, Mitch has taught Theatre History, Cinema History, Acting, Directing and Film Production. He has designed and led upper-division seminars in “Art and Culture” and on stage practices in Theatre, Opera and Dance. He conducts scene study workshops and master classes and offers dialogue/acting coaching for professional and student actors. He is also regularly called on to offer critiques in the Directing and Playwrighting sessions of the Actors Studio.
Mitch has worked in theatres throughout Europe, Asia, Oceania and the Americas. His work has been seen at the Sydney Opera House, Manhattan's Lincoln Center, the Brooklyn Academy of Music, Sadler's Wells in London, the Ronacher Theatre in Vienna, Artsphere in Tokyo, the Teatro Liceu in Barcelona, the Teatro Olimpico in Rome, the Metropolitan Theatre in Rio and the Maisón dès Arts in Paris and Lyon. He recently directed SLICES d’ AMOR in Hollywood and the current national tour of Samuel Joseph/Phil Proctor’s GOD HELP US!, starring Ed Asner, Friedrich Dürrenmatt’s THE VISIT, starring Barbara Bain, and a multi-media/spoken-word/dance work set to Verdi’s REQUIEM, to be conducted by Gustavo Dudamel. He collaborated with Peter Gabriel and Moses Pendleton on the creation of the mixed-media stage production PASSION in London, served as Artistic Supervisor for the world tour of the Robert Wilson/Philip Glass opera, EINSTEIN ON THE BEACH, designed the world premiere of PAURA DI VOLARE at La Scala in Milan, collaborated on the worldwide broadcast of the Festa a Corte in Montova and for the Bolshoi Ballet at Delphi's ancient Olympic Stadium. He directed the revival of Cynthia Lee's A DREAM WITHIN A DREAM for the Pacific Resident Theatre, directed and designed the acclaimed revival of Arthur Kopit's WINGS (Best Production, Direction and Lighting Design Awards) in Los Angeles and staged Jean Anouilh's ANTIGONE for the Williamstown Theatre Festival. He directed Timothy Mason's SORRY! at Circle Rep in New York, Glen Merzer's AMORPHOUS GEORGE in Manhattan and New Haven for the MCC Company (where he was a founding member of their Directors Unit) and the revival of Lyle Kessler's ORPHANS for ATA in New York. He worked on the La Jolla, Broadway and national productions of BIG RIVER and his revival of PIPPIN re-opened the historic Opera House at the Geneva Performing Arts Festival. His "New Wave" adaptation of the musical GODSPELL was awarded Best Production and Best Director honors at the La Jolla Stage Company in San Diego. For many years, he was the Production Director and designer of MOMIX Dance Theatre.
Mitch has become know as an “actor’s director” and a teacher and coach readily able to help his clients attain their goals on stage and screen.
