About Ellie

Hello! My name is Ellie. I am a certified special educator as well as, specifically, a teacher of the deaf and hard of hearing. I hold two masters of education: deaf/hard of hearing, and reading specialist. I have a strong background in working with students with various special needs and with specific language delays in addition to my formal education. With these experiences, I am able to provide student-centered and individually paced instruction to support the development of language, cognition, and literacy skills.

Sometimes it just takes a new opportunity or a new way of explaining something for it to click! I love using flexible ways of teaching and a diagnositc teaching methodology to best support my students. When I see that click and wheels turning in their brain - that's what makes my job so meaningful!

I am currently completing my second full year of instruction via telepractice in addition to in person teaching. I previously provided early intervention services to infants and toddlers and their families via skype, zoom, facetime, etc. Currently, due to the closing of in person schools, I use the same methods with my middle school students. Being invited into a student's home through the computer or tablet allows us to work on meaningful material by using the resources that are available to them which not only allows them to engage during our sessions but also to continue to carry over their practice when I'm not around - because they're not relying on me to bring my own toys, books, materials. They have them in their home and always will.

I am a teacher of the deaf/hard of hearing in NYC schools, I work with middle schoolers, grades 6-8, in small groups or one on one sessions to support their academics. I was previously a classroom teacher for preschoolers with hearing loss and language delays. I hold a masters in deaf and hard of hearing education as well as a masters in reading. My bachelor of science degree is in early childhood general and special education. I have a wide range of experiences working with students with a variety of learning styles, needs, abilities and interests.

When I first work with a student, I will always assess their current skills in the area we are targetting. If I don't know what they already know and what they need to build on, how would we know where to start?

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students and families should have at least a beginning sense of a goal they want to work towards. This can be as simple as: my math homework is so overwhelming and I want to learn this specific math skill or as complex as: I want to learn how to organize my school tasks, make a plan, and follow through with it independently.
