About Hong

Hong was born in to a family of educators. He attended Shanghai Jiao Tong University, where he studied Biomedical Engineering, and then joined Purdue University in the U.S. for his PhD program in Electrical and Computer Engineering. After obtaining his PhD, he first joined Cornell University Medical College as a faculty member where he conducted and overseen technical aspects of human in vivo functional and molecular neuroimaging and trained multidisciplinary students, research fellows and clinician scientists, and then moved to Harvard Medical School as a faculty member where he further his invention to innovation technology transfer journey in data science applications for medical imaging.

Hong has tutored and mentored a variety of STEM subjects for high school, college and graduate students during spare time, especially in Extracurricular Research Project mentoring.

Though deeply interested in scientific research and technical innovation, Hong remained fascinated by the literary work (novels and essays), philosophy, history, and language in general, and enjoyed performing translation work of serious literature from English to Chinese and got published in the Greater China Region and beyond, as a hobby.

If you’d like to get help from an expert practitioner of the subject matter to speed up your learning process and to gain insights and inspirations beyond standard textbooks and classrooms, please let me be your mentor, your sounding board, and your partner in the pursuit of retrieving the Golden Fleece.

Hong has been tutoring, mentoring and coaching students from high school, undergraduate to postbaccalaureate during his spare time for years now, especially in AP Statistics, Research Internship, Capstone Projects, and Extracurricular Leadership Programs, for college or graudate school admission applications, with much success (students not only have performed well with their Stats courses and tests, but also have their first research papers/abstracts submitted to and accepted by professional conferences or junior research journals).

Served as a guide, an advisor, and a sounding board to brilliant young minds, helping next generation of learners discover their inspiration, grow their knowledgebase and skill sets, become successful contributors to society, all of these are bringing great joys to this tutor's mind and everyday life.

I have obtained a wide range of analytic, engineering and technical knowledge background from multiple disciplines, ranging from biomedical, electrical and computer engineering, to advanced mathematics and statsitics at PhD level, and combined with developing AI/ML and Data Science applications in biomedical research through my professional career.  The insights and perspectives my mentees will gain from our tutoring programs will be well beyond the limit of the textbooks and classroms.

Effective and Fun Learning Strategy: Pursuing a conceptual understanding and internalizing of math/stat ideas would be the key to grasp the essentials to go beyond isolated facts and methods, with examples of real-world problem-solving from your quizzes and homework, to succeed in any STEM course work.  Together we can make your learning experiences fun and effective.

I'll hold an initial online/phone consultation meeting with the prospective student to discuss:

(1) the situation the student is in

(2) what kind of help the student needs

(3) set the goal and the duration of the tutoring program

(4) schedule time slots ahead of the subsequent meeting time, determine the tools to be used for communication (Zoom, Skype, Zotero, Github, Google Doc, etc)

During the tutoring program, after each meeting, the student and I will update Session Summary to log and track the progress: what we went over, what the student did well and where can be improved, what the homework assignment due next meeting, etc.

from high school, college, post-baccalaureate, to graduate school students, and adult learners

Set a realistic goal first, and then we can work together to set a path with actionable items, timelines and milestones,  to reach the goal and beyond.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Be honest with what are your obstacles you felt when taking this course or task, and how that is related to your strength and weakness in the past (with examples), then we can work together to figure out the best way to help you reach your goal.
