About Roxie
I believe in the well-rounded student, and dance/theatre provide a great basis for developing one's own goals and morals. I am a dancer and actress in San Diego, and I strive to share my experiences with my students in ways I either appreciated from my own mentors, or wished I had more of growing up. My training is a mixture of different elements in performance arts. For twenty years, I have studied styles of dance, including: Ballet, Modern/Contemporary, Jazz, Tap, and Hip Hop. I am experienced in Theatre arts, from acting and improvisational classes to performing in local theatres. I offer private and group classes for whatever my students may need-- vocal lessons, audition preparation, monologue study, technical dance work, and more. I cater my private lessons to the student, and focus on the individual as we work together.
Even more than performing, I find joy in teaching and am passionate about the growth of my students. Whether we are working on jazz walks or vocal scales, I always love working with aspiring performers and those who wish to learn more about the theatrical/dancing world. There is nothing more rewarding than working with a student and seeing their growth, and I am passionate about finding each person's strengths and interests, and building from who they already are.
I began teaching very young, through my studio's mentoring program growing up. I went on to teach with companies including Dance to Evolve and Heartlight San Diego, which served as a great foundation in my journey as a teacher. Now, through my own business and my work with Othentik Gym, I am growing every day and finding my own method as an instructor and performer.
I have been training and performing in dance and theatre for over twenty years. I began in Ballet, which has provided me with a strong fundamental understanding of technical dance and discipline as an athelete. I later began performing in local theatres and taking lessons to further my acting and vocal skills. I moved forward into styles I fell in love with, like Jazz and Tap dancing, and studied Modern and Hip Hop for years as well. Through high school and college, I have studied performance arts, mixed with physical education and childhood development to become a more well-rounded teacher.

Each new student is a blank canvas to me-- with so much potential to become uniquely beautiful. Especially for private lessons, I believe in getting to know my students before getting started. I ask questions about their experience, learning styles, and goals as atheletes/performers. As we begin lessons, I take note of the student's tendancies and strenghts. Every few weeks, I take time one-on-one with my students to check in with their progress, asking them questions like: "In what ways do you feel you have grown?", "What parts about class have felt frustrating or challenging for you?", and "What can we further work on in your training to help get you to where you would like to be?" Getting to know my students this way helps me as a teacher, as well as helps them think critically about their journey and aspirations.
I have worked with students as young as two years old, as well as seniors, and everything in between. My main experience lies in the 3-17 year age range, and I love working with kids and juniors. I have a handful of students with special needs and disabilities, which has taught me a lot about my own teaching style. I am always looking for students who want to grow and learn, whether they are professional dancers in need of a workout, or if they have never danced or performed in their life.
I always advise finding a teacher who is willing to know you as a person. I have had teachers who, even in a class of 50, find a way to give individual feedback and that sort of care has influenced me positively in my own career. There is much more to being a teacher than just sharing knowledge, and it is important to find an instructor who cares about the well-rounded student.
Recently, I taught a camp at Othentik Gym that I was able to design myself. The camp focused on skills I have learned through theatre that I felt were important for every person to know; such as speaking in front of others, improvisational skills, basic dance moves, and breathing/centering exercises. Seeing my students (new and old) break their boundaries and step out of their comfort zones through the world of theatre was one of my more rewarding moments as a teacher.

I offer private and group lessons through my own business, which are held at Othentik Gym in La Mesa, where I also teach. Othentik Gym members receive a discounted rate, as do small groups. For the first lesson, I also offer a $10 discount!

Small Group (2-5 students): $30/student/hour (free of rental fee)
